2010 Monster Energy Mammoth Motocross

The Monster Energy Mammoth Motocross, scheduled for June 17-27, 2010, is recognized as one of the top amateur national events in the motorcycle industry.  Many riders have honed their skills on the challenging Mammoth Motocross Track over the years including Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, James Stewart, Rick Johnson, David Bailey, Travis Pastrana and others.

Depending on the year, you can expect to see arrays of forget-me-nots, Mariposa lilies, violets and fritillary lilies, which will be in seed later in the summer. This class is a wonderful opportunity to spend time walking around the spectacular Valentine Meadow. The hike is moderately strenuous, with a 500' elevation gain. Bring water, hat, sunscreen and a snack.

Ken lives in the posh Alexandria Hotel and frequently lunches at the California Club with William Mulholland. He is acquainted with William Valentine (Robinson's Department Store), Henry O'Melveney (law), William Kerchoff (Southern California Gas), and Joseph Sartori (Security Pacific Bank). Ken is invited to be their guest in 1924 at Valentine Camp. Ken will tell stories about Los Angeles, Old Mammoth, and life with the rich and powerful at Valentine Camp. Triathlon starts at 9:00 am at Whitmore Pool.  It's $35 per individual for either the long course (500 meter swim; 21 mile bike ride and 3 mile run) or the sprint course (200 meter swim; 6 mile bike and 2 mile run).  There is also a family/team challenge sprint section- the sprint distance broken between 2 or 3 family/team members of any relationship. $55 per team.

Sierra Summer Festival - Beethoven, the Man and the Music

This intimate concert will open with members of the Eastern Sierra Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s early work for winds, the Octet in E-flat, Opus 103. Pianist, Stephen Beus, will perform 15 Variations and Fugue in E-flat Major, Opus 35, the “Eroica” Variations, a composition illustrating the creative independence of the young composer.          

Beethoven’s String Quartet in E flat Major, Opus 74, “The Harp”, composed shortly after his Fifth Symphony, will be performed by the principal string players of the Eastern Sierra Symphony Orchestra, Maria Newman and Scott Hosfield violins, Andrew Pickens viola, and Leighton Fong cello.           The audience can expect to be entertained as well as educated with Charles Scatolini’s dramatic narrative perspective on the life and times of Ludwig van Beethoven, his personal struggles and triumphs, as well as insights into the music performed in this evening’s concert.

The exciting climax to the 2010 Sierra Summer Festival will open with the Eastern Sierra Symphony Orchestra performing the Overture to “Egmont”, Opus 84. Award winning pianist, Stephen Beus, will join the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s startlingly dramatic Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.3 in C Minor, Opus 37. The victorious Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Opus 67, perhaps the most popular of Beethoven’s compositions, will bring the concert to a dynamic finale.       Accompanying the music will be a narrative by Charles Scatolini giving the audience an insight into the musical program and a greater understanding and appreciation of the evening’s musical performance.  Immediately following the Friday evening concert the audience is cordially invited to meet the musicians at a punch and cookies reception generously hosted by Anita Haenni and the Mammoth Lakes Women’s Club.

Celebration of Women of the Eastern Sierra - Nellie Bly O'Bryan & her Upside-Down House

Organized by the Eastern Sierra Cultural Heritage Alliance, an exhibit about Nellie Bly O'Bryan and her Upside-Down House will be on display at the Old School House Museum in Lee Vining beginning May 28 through the summer season. Nellie Bly O'Bryan was a visionary, entrepreneur, and long time resident of the Mono Basin.  Originally located along US 395 north of the Tioga Lodge, the "house" was inspired by two childrens' stories – "Upside Down Land" and "The Upsidedownians."  Upon her death in 1984, the Upside-Down House fell into disrepair until it was rescued and moved to its current site in October 2000.  The house became Mono County's first man-made tourist attraction in 1956.  For more information, please contact the Mono Basin Historical Society, Lee Vining, CA 93541 by phone at (760) 647-6461 or
